How Nevada Marriage Laws Just Got Even More Interesting

However, on June 1, 2009, Nevada Legislature overrode Governor Jim Gibbons’ veto of a proposed bill regarding domestic partnership in a 28:14 vote.  Senate also procured a 2/3 vote of 14:7.  This means the bill regarding the legality of domestic partnerships becomes legal on October 1, 2009.

In order to qualify for Nevada domestic partnership, the couple must sign a registry at the Secretary of State’s office.  In the registration form, a fee for the contract is paid and the couple gains the same legal rights and responsibilities as married couples.  These rights include healthcare, financial, and child custody issues.

Opponents of Domestic Partnerships

Opponents of domestic partnerships feel that it is a backdoor method to legalizing same-sex marriage, but the people taking advantage of these privileges extend beyond same-sex couples.  Many male/female relationships are registered in a domestic registry.

Advantages of a Domestic Partnership

When a couple is living together, a domestic partnership is an easy way to share in household financial privileges.  In the case of an emergency, the partner has the right to make medical and funeral arrangements.  In addition, a domestic partnership is easily revoked.
