Infidelity is such a nightmare. At the outset of each marriage, in most cases, couples shudder at the thought of one day falling victim to infidelity. Unfortunately, as years passed, some couples who were once living their dreams did fall victim to cheating, shattering the hopes and dreams that they built for them. Fortunately enough, infidelity can be avoided. Avoiding infidelity could spare you the hurt of one day catching your spouse cheating just because you took the signs for granted.
How can any couple avoid infidelity?
The first thing to do is to be aware of the symptoms that your marriage is almost on the rocks. In an article by Carol Boulware, Ph.D. shares helpful insights about the signs that a marriage could be in trouble and what to do when these signs turn up.
- People who have cheated say that they wound up in affairs because their sexual and emotional needs were not satisfied in their marriage. They long for the kind of attention and affection that they used to get at the beginning of a relationship. To keep a spouse from straying, don’t take them for granted. Show them just how much they mean to you, and don’t hold out on the sexual part of your relationship.
- Some people who enter affairs may be releasing their anger toward their spouse. While it may not be the most mature thing to do, this type of thing does happen. In order to release their anger, they turn towards affairs with other people. A good way to avoid infidelity in this instance is to try and talk your feelings over with your wife or husband every time there is a disagreement. Counseling and therapy can also help avoid infidelity for extreme cases.
- It can also happen that there are so many conflicts in your marriage, that one of you is using sex as a weapon or punishment. To avoid infidelity, it’s best to consult with a marriage counselor or therapist.
- Another sign that your marriage is on the rocks that you and your partner no longer trust each other, and cannot be intimate anymore. This is usually the result of the above-mentioned situations. You can avoid infidelity by solving the problems above, so you won’t have to get to this point.
- Unrealistic expectations are also certain paths to a bad marriage. If the two of you keep expecting that things will stay as seemingly perfect as it was in the beginning, you have to change the way you think to avoid infidelity in the future. Problems will arise, and you two should deal with things as they come instead of blaming each other or yearning for the good old days.
Given all these signs each couple could then draw all the necessary steps to ensure that their relationship is guarded. Maintaining an open line of communication between spouses, understanding and giving the needs of your spouse and reliving your commitment to your spouse are just some of the ways that your could take to avoid infidelity. Remember, infidelity is a disease. Make sure your relationship is healthy to ward of any marital disease that could arrive any time.
