Cheating on a spouse, as discussed in my previous post can be prevented if both spouses cooperate and establish an open line of communication to mend whatever marital problems plague them.

But what causes cheating?

In her article What makes people cheat on a spouse?, Nydia Conrad underscores some of the most common reasons people decide to become unfaithful to their spouses which are mostly instigated by one of the spouse’s personality. These reasons are:

  • an individual may enjoy the thrill and secrecy involved with cheating
  • an individual is trying to re-live the honeymoon period associated with new relationships
  • sexual incompatibility, which can lead a partner to stray
  • a combination of lack of communication, marital dissatisfaction and opportunity

These are the causes of devastating decisions of parties involved to ultimately put an end to their relationship which often leads to expensive legal battles over child custody and other issues that need to be resolved. The reasons cited above that cause marital infidelity are caused mostly by lack of self-discipline and self-control. These could easily get out of hand. But of the four reasons, the last one is probably the reason over which both spouses can greatly control.I bet everyone would agree that communication is key to success in every marital relationship. Think about it, if spouses maintain a healthy and open line of communication, they talk about things that need to be discussed, share their thoughts and emotions, do you think any of the aforementioned causes of infidelity could find its way into anyone’s relationship?
